Mentoring

Chapter 9 tells you to find friends who are ahead of you — people five, ten, or twenty years down the road who have already walked through what you’re facing. That’s easy to write and hard to do. We’re building something to help.

One conversation with the right person can shift the direction of your entire life.

Why this exists

For more than twenty years I’ve mentored young adults through this exact season — the decisions about career, money, faith, and marriage that get made in your twenties and quietly shape everything after. Almost all of it happened one relationship at a time, over lunches and phone calls.

The limitation is obvious: I can only be in so many of those conversations. So my wife Trina and I are building something that doesn’t depend on me being in the room — a way to connect young men with mentors who are genuinely ahead of them, and to do the kind of service work that changes how you see your own life.

Some of that will run through Become More, the nonprofit we cofounded, which helps villages in Cambodia create sustainable paths out of extreme poverty and is building an initiative in the United States focused on mentoring young adults.

What we’re building

One to one

Matching young men with mentors who have already walked the road they’re on — in career, faith, marriage, or business.

Small groups

Cohorts working through the framework together, so you’re not the only one doing the hard parts.

Service trips

Perspective is the fastest teacher there is. Going somewhere and being useful changes what you think you need.

Becoming a mentor

Chapter 9 also says you need friends behind you. Teaching someone else clarifies your own identity faster than almost anything.

Where it actually stands

Honestly: early. The book comes first, then the site, then this. I’d rather tell you that plainly than take your name and go quiet for a year.

What would genuinely help right now is knowing who’s interested and what they need. Add your name below and I’ll write to you when applications open.

I’d like a mentor

For young men working through this season.

I’d like to mentor

We need mentors before we can match anyone.

In the meantime

Don’t wait on us. Chapter 9 has a call to action that works today: identify one person already ahead of you, and send them a short message.

“I admire the way you live. Could I take you to lunch sometime and ask a few questions?”

Most people say yes. Almost nobody asks.
