Chapter Two
The Four Steps to Building
a Meaningful Life
Discover, Refine, Build, Strive. You’ll run this process on your identity, your faith, your career, your money, your marriage, and your health — and then again at every season of life that follows.
The core idea
A dull saw doesn’t cut better
because you push harder
Most people skip straight to effort. They work hard, stay busy, and assume that momentum will eventually produce direction. It rarely does. Effort applied to the wrong target is still wasted effort.
The Four Steps are sequential for a reason. You discover what’s possible before you narrow it. You refine against reality before you commit. You build a plan before you grind. And then you strive — consistently, through setbacks — until intention becomes identity.
That bias isn’t a flaw. It’s useful information. Once you know which step you’re drawn to, you also know which one you’ll be tempted to skip — and that’s usually the one standing between you and the thing you want.
