Choosing a career
with purpose
A job that excites you at 22 can exhaust you at 45. Your career is not your identity — it’s the strategy you design to buy back your time and build the capacity to live the life your compass is pointing toward.
The core idea
Passion follows mastery. It rarely leads.
So many young adults wait to feel passionate before they take action, when in reality passion shows up after you start moving, learning, and making progress.
Discovery is not about chasing passion. It’s about discovering alignment — finding the overlap between what you’re naturally good at, what energizes you, and the life you actually want to build.
Verify
Meet mentors, shadow professionals, ask about schedule, income structure, stress, and long-term growth. Study the day-to-day reality, not the social-media version.
Discern
Apply pressure. Does it still make sense after real exposure? Can you see yourself living this life in 10 to 20 years? Where are the hidden costs no one talks about?
Align & Pray
Measure what’s left against your Identity Standard, then bring it to God. If you get silence, use the Stop Me Prayer and keep moving.
That’s why you must set your compass before you chase your career. Get your identity right. Get your relationship with God right. Only then can you build a career that supports the life you want to create.

Start designing your career on purpose
This week, don’t overthink it. Four simple actions.
Write your career narrative
One short paragraph. Your strengths, what energizes you, and the kind of lifestyle you want for your future family. This becomes the input for everything else below.
Ask three people who know you well
Parents, aunts and uncles, mentors, coaches, leaders, close friends, former companions. Ask them: “What makes me different? What strengths do you see in me? Where do you imagine me thriving?”
They will name patterns you thought were normal. Those patterns are your competitive advantages.
Run one AI career search
Take your narrative, plug it into AI, and look at the 5–10 careers it returns that you’ve never seriously considered. Use AI as an option-generator, not a decision-maker — real life, mentors, verification, and prayer make the final call.
Pick three careers to verify
Choose three and schedule at least one informational interview for each over the next few weeks. A scheduled conversation beats another month of research.
Do those four things and you’ll be miles ahead of most young adults your age — not drifting, but designing your life on purpose.
